Bourton-on-the-Water has often been nicknamed as ‘Little Venice’ or ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’ and it’s no surprise that visitors come from all over the world and love to explore this beautiful village in the Cotswolds. Bourton is located in Gloucestershire near Stow-on-the-Wold, close to Upper and Lower Slaughter and is a typical Cotswold village that has been beautifully kept situated on the River Windrush. The earliest piece of evidence of human living in Bourton was found in the Slaughter Bridge gravel spread where beautiful pieces of Neolithic pottery was found.
The picturesque village is perhaps most famous for its pretty high street, lined by wide grassy greens. The river runs right through the centre of the village and there are several low, arched stone bridges for pedestrians to cross as they browse the village. During the peak season, Bourton often has more visitors than residents, especially with the village green as a perfect place to sit with a picnic while children and dogs paddle in the shallow slow-flowing river next to you. The river is perhaps the central attraction, with beautiful willow trees draping over it, surrounded like interesting shops and cafes. The village houses and buildings are constructed with the well-known and attractive Cotswold stone with projecting gables and windows with stone millions.
Birdland Park and Gardens
Birdland Park has been open since 1957 and is a popular attraction for visitors and families. The wildlife park is located in 5 acres of grounds from a beautiful Tudor manor house called Chardwar and there are over 500 birds and around 150 aviaries. There’s penguins, flamingos, cranes, storks, parrots and many more exciting birds to discover. Birdland is on the edge of the village near to Bourton-on-the-Water’s famous Model Village.
The Model Village
The Model Village is a popular attraction for visitors to Bourton village and is open all year round. The Model Village is an exact replica of Bourton village itself, only standing waist height. The replica has everything included from tiny streets and houses and the village church, to the trees and river that runs through Bourton. The Model Village is a great place to see and the entrance fee is minimal.
