Why You Should Visit the Cotswolds
Around fifty years ago, the region of the Cotswolds was noted as an area of outstanding natural beauty and it’s no surprise to anyone who visits. Visit the Cotswolds to discover a beautiful area in the south-west of England, surrounded by rolling hills and sweeping meadows that take your eye for miles across the stunning countryside. Charming Cotswold villages and market towns dot the landscape throughout several counties, including Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Wiltshire and parts of north-east Somerset. Castles, villages and towns are built from honey-coloured Cotswold stone which is a famous limestone in the area.
The Cotswolds and Fame
The Cotswold region covers 800 square miles and has a population of around 139,000 people. The area was once famous for being one of the biggest contributors to the wool trade in Europe. When the cloth trade moved to the north of England after the industrial revolution, sheep farming lessened in the area and the region remained quiet, unspoilt and avoided overdevelopment. The ‘wolds’ or the rolling hills of the Cotswolds is the biggest area out of 38 areas of outstanding natural beauty in England and Wales. There are many royal connections here, with residents including the Prince of Wales at the Highgrove Estate, Princess Anne and Zara Phillips. There are also many celebrities who live in the Cotswolds, including Liz Hurley, Kate Moss, Kate Winslet, Amanda Holden, Alex James from Blur, Damien Hirst and Jeremy Clarkson. It is also reported that David and Victoria Beckham have recently bought a property in the North Cotswolds.
The Cotswolds is a gateway to many beautiful cities including Cheltenham, Bath and Oxford which are wonderful places to visit if you enjoy shopping. Cotswold villages are perhaps the most inviting and romantic of places in the Cotswolds, where villages are hidden down country lanes, located near dense woodland and meandering rivers. The Cotswolds has some of the most beautiful villages including Bourton-on-the-Water, Chastleton, Great Tew, Broadway and Lower Slaughter. Indeed, Copse Hill Road in Lower Slaughter was named as one of the most romantic streets in England by Google Maps. Cotswold villages are usually made up of beautiful stone cottages with thatched roofs and there are often large stately homes on the edge of the villages. There is always a perfectly manicured village green, small local primary school and a good local village pub.
Beautiful Gardens and Walking Areas
If you enjoy discovering beautiful gardens in the countryside then don’t miss a visit to Hidcote Manor which is one of the most famous arts and crafts gardens in England. Hidcote Manor was created by Major Lawrence Johnston, a famous horticulturist and the gardens include herbaceous borders, beautiful blooming flower beds and sculpted hedges. Batsford Arboretum is also a beautiful place to visit especially in the autumn when the trees are changing colour and where you can walk through the grounds in breath-taking acres of beautiful land. If you enjoy walking then then there are some amazing hiking trails in the Cotswolds including the Cotswold trail which offers magnificent views across the fields of Evesham as far as the Welsh mountains on a clear day.
